There are so many things to see and do on Belle-Île-en-Mer that one day wouldn’t be enough. Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay longer. We opted to rent a car to explore the island. You’ll find rental agencies right as you exit the boat in Le Palais. Be sure to arrive early because it gets busy during peak season, and you might end up waiting in line for a long time or even find nothing available to rent!
Exploring Belle-Île-en-Mer and its notable landmarks
Once you have your car, head towards Sauzon. Your first stop is this quaint village with its harbor and colorful houses. For food enthusiasts, make a stop at a restaurant or the local bakery to indulge in regional specialties.
From Sauzon, take the road or the walking path towards Pointe des Poulains. The landscape is breathtaking! Take the time to admire the ocean, the rocks, and the colors of the water… Relax on the beach and maybe take a swim! Then, continue your visit to the lighthouse and La villa des Cinq Parties du Monde to discover Sarah Bernhardt’s story. Her life is recounted in the villa, where the interior has been faithfully restored.
Continue your exploration at the Maison du Littoral, a place children will love. Tablets, illustrated panels, films, and games invite you to discover the island’s marine and terrestrial biodiversity; admission to the first level is free.
We continue our journey towards the wild coast and the Needles of Port Coton
The landscapes are stunning and leave us speechless: the power of the ocean, the rugged coastline… We took the opportunity to descend into a small cove and go for a swim, much to the delight of the children. It was low tide, so we discovered and encountered some species like starfish and octopuses…
Continue your tour of the island by visiting the large sandy beaches, perfect for swimming, although we preferred the coves along the wild coasts. Finish your tour by returning to Le Palais. If you have time left, conclude your visit with the Vauban Citadel.
